American Family Insurance
Our Pledge for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
We believe a strong culture of diversity, equity and inclusion is essential to inspiring, protecting and restoring the dreams of our customers — and our employees. It’s why we’re committed to creating a collaborative environment where uniqueness is valued and individuals are treated equitably. We’re focused on building key partnerships, driving the accountability of our leaders, and embedding critical equity and inclusion learnings into the fabric of our business.
We recognize the structural barriers in our society that keep people from achieving their dreams, and we’re committed to doing our part to break down these barriers. American Family is committed to tackling systemic problems that impede equity – because it’s good for our communities and good for business.
Our Actions
Inclusive Core Value
Incorporating ‘inclusive’ as an enterprise core value, along with resources to support employees in their day-to-day interactions with each other, and with our customers.
Demographics People Report
Creating an enterprise demographics people report to provide leaders deeper insight into the diversity of our workforce and where gaps may be occurring.
Company Leadership Events
Focusing efforts at company leadership events to build accountability toward diversity and inclusion across the Enterprise.
Our Business Resource Groups
American Family’s nine Business Resource Groups (BRGs) promote inclusion in the workplace by providing a network for employees who share commonality or interests, and allies to those groups. In 2020, we added four new BRGs to our family — the Black/African American Business Resource Group (BAABRG), Hispanic/Latinx Business Resource Group (HLBRG), South Asian Business Resource Group (SABRG) and the Southeast/East Asian Business Resource Group (SEABRG).
American Family’s Business Resource Groups include:
- Women Business Resource Group
- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and Allies Business Resource Group
- Veteran and Military Business Resource Group
- Abilities Business Resource Group
- Multicultural Business Resource Group
- Black/African American Business Resource Group

Empowering Equitable Futures
Hispanic Promise
Starting in 2020, American Family became 1 of 150 companies committed to the Hispanic Promise, a national pledge to hire, promote, retain and celebrate Hispanic people in the workplace and the community.
Fair Chance Hiring Initiative
American Family uses proactive recruitment practices to create career opportunities for those formerly impacted by the justice system. In partnership with The Institute, we're evaluating internal policies and business practices to help close equity gaps in our communities and ensure all job applicants are treated with the respect they deserve.
Inclusive Conversations
We invest in cultivating cultural dexterity and encourage advocacy and allyship. In 2020 we launched an Anti-Racism Resource Toolkit and Inclusive Conversation Toolkit for our employees.
Supplier Diversity
With the relationships we’ve formed through our Supplier Diversity Program, members of American Family’s BRGs have the opportunity to attend or lead events, participate in mentorship programs and purchase items or services from diverse-owned businesses.
Investing In Our Employees
American Family believes an individual’s well-being goes beyond physical health. It extends to emotional and mental health, financial well-being, community engagement, meaningful relationships, stress management, and heightened mindfulness.
New Challenges
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges across our enterprise, and the well-being of our employees was of critical importance. In addition to launching new programs and resources, we expanded benefits to care for employees’ whole selves with support that extends beyond their work lives. Some of these include:
- Tutoring programs for those with children learning remotely
- Mental health and emotional support programs and resources
- Employee discounts to assist with new or changing needs as a result of working remotely
- Adoption assistance
- Programs to encourage civic engagement, including paid time off to vote and volunteer at a polling place
These changes were embraced, with over half of American Family Insurance Enterprise employees participating in a well-being program in 2020.
